The Gilded Life of Isabella Stewart Gardner Online
Isabella Stewart Gardner, an amazing Gilded Age woman of privilege, decided as a teenager she would have a mansion filled with beautiful objets d’art. To that end, she became an art collector, socialite and patron of the arts, changing the taste and appreciation of art in America. Isabella traveled the world with her husband, researching artists and locations before their travels, then keeping journals for future reference and purchases. Isabella introduced America to Botticelli, Raphael and Giotto when she was the first in America to acquire works by these artists. In 1903, her mansion opened as The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and is still one of the greatest collections of art in America. Presented by Jeanne Johnson, docent at the Princeton University Art Museum as well as Morven Museum and Gardens.
